Our Story
Every measurement tells the truth — if the instrument is honest. That belief has guided Cambridge Instruments & Engineering Co. since the very beginning.
It started with Prakash Chandra Sharma, a physicist by training, who looked at India’s fast-growing electrical and power industries in the early 1960s and saw a gap. The country was wiring itself for the future, yet the instruments needed to test that work safely and accurately were scarce, expensive, and often imported. In 1963, armed with a bachelor’s degree in physics and an engineer’s instinct for precision, he founded CIE in Kolkata to change that — one reliable instrument at a time.
What began on a modest workbench became a name engineers learned to trust. Decades on, the company he built is carried forward by his two sons, Manoj Sharma and Rajesh Sharma, who have grown CIE from its Kolkata roots into a trusted partner to contractors, utilities, manufacturers, laboratories, and institutions across the length and breadth of India. The tools have modernised — from hand-driven testers to fully digital instruments — but the founding principle hasn’t moved an inch: measurement you can stake your work on.
What We Do
CIE designs and manufactures its own range of CIE-branded instruments — hand-driven, motorised, and digital insulation testers, earth testers, micro-ohm meters, relay and oil test sets, and more — each one tested in-house before it ever reaches a customer.
